May 28 - June 1

It's the last week before finals!

A few reminders/announcements:
  • June 1 is the last day to turn in any make-up work for partial credit.
  • Please turn in any outstanding library books asap.
  • Journals are due Friday, June 1 during class.
  • The entire school will read A Step Toward Falling this summer. It's available on Amazon for $4.19 as of this update.

MONDAY: Memorial Day holiday. 

TUESDAY, 4th period: (Adjusted Class Comp schedule): Fill out questionnaire. Brainstorming Worksheet, interview each other and fill out. Journal exercise. Go over 4 options for final assignment. Read a sample and evaluate as a class.

Due: n/a

Homework: Decide which of the 4 options you will write for the final assignment. If you're planning on applying to colleges, research what their requirements are for a personal statement/essay.

Continue work on Independent Reading Final Assignment, due Friday, June 1.

TUESDAY, 6th period: (Adjusted Class Comp schedule): Journal warm-up. Go over 4 options for final assignment. Read a sample and evaluate as a class. Time on laptops to begin writing.

Homework: Decide which of the 4 options you will write for the final assignment. If you're planning on applying to colleges, research what their requirements are for a personal statement/essay.

Continue work on Independent Reading Final Assignment, due Friday, June 1.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: Journal warm-up. Discuss topic choices for college essays.  Read and evaluate samples as a class. Begin writing on laptops, with individual help.

Due: Decide which of the 4 options you will write for the final assignment. If you're planning on applying to colleges, research what their requirements are for a personal statement/essay.

Homework: Continue work on Independent Reading Final Assignment, due Friday, June 1.

FRIDAY: (All review day: 55 minute classes) Journal warm-up, then put them in the classroom bin. How to add imagery/specific details to your essay to ensure it's highlighting your important points and unique to you.  Work time on laptops.

Due: Journals in the classroom bin for a final journal check.

Independent Reading Final Assignment due to Independent Reading section on Turnitin.com by Friday, June 1 at 10:00 p.m.

Homework: Continue working on the final college essay which will be uploaded on the day and time of your final next week.

May 21 - 25

Three weeks left of school, including finals! Wow, it's going fast. I've really been enjoying the Raisin readings and especially the warm-up discussions over the last two weeks. This week, we'll finish Raisin and A day will begin the last unit: the college essay or job title assignment.

Also, it's CAASP testing week. Monday through Thursday, half of the students will be out for testing.

(Monday - half of the students in 2nd period, Tuesday - half of the students in 4th period, and all students in 6th period. Wednesday  - the other half of the students in 2nd period, and Thursday - the other half of 4th period): Journal warm-up. Read the last scene of A Raisin in the Sun together (Act III, Scene I). Take the Raisin quiz. Go over the Independent Reading Assignment.

Due: Please upload the final version of the Sustainable Foods Essay to Turnitin.com by Sunday, May 20 at 10:00 p.m.

Homework:  Work on the Independent Reading Assignment, due on June 1.

THURSDAY (6th period only): Journal warm-up. Work time for Independent Reading Assignment, Brainstorm activity for college essays.

May 14 - 18

It's the last week of AP testing! This week in class, we'll work on final drafts of the Foods Essay and continue with A Raisin in the Sun.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. Read and share final draft samples of the food essay and evaluate them. Read Act II, Scene I of Raisin.  (2nd period will go to the library and work on final drafts.)

Due: Have an electronically-accessible version of your essay draft ready to share.

Homework: Read Raisin, Act II, Scene II for Thursday/Friday.

Continue working on Foods Essay - final due date is Sunday, May 20 at 10:00 p.m. to Turnitin.com.

WEDNESDAY: Journal warm-up. Current event day - read and annotate two opposing viewpoints. Discuss and debate, vote. Outline the majority opinion in a synthesis/ACT-style outline response based on the discussion.

Due: n/a

Homework: Same as Monday.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Journal warm-up. Read Raisin, Act II, Scene III in class. (For 4th and 6th, time to work on essay drafts on the computers in the library.)

Due: Read Raisin, Act II, Scene II.

May 7 - 11

We'll begin A Raisin in the Sun this week! I'm excited to see the class read and perform this modern and lively play by Lorraine Hansberry. We'll continue working on the Sustainable Food essays as well.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Journal warm-up. View sample outlines, discuss essay progress. Introduction to A Raisin in the Sun. Pick up the books from the library, begin reading and acting out the play.

Due: Full, detailed outline of Food policy essay due to Turnitin.com by Sunday, May 6th at 10:00 p.m., including the placement of the 3 required sources.

Homework: Finish reading A Raisin in the Sun, Act I, Scene I. Here is a link in case you missed today due to APs, (you will need to download the pdf). Please pick up a copy from the library when you can.

With two weeks of AP testing, followed by CAST, I thought I'd post exactly what the rest of the assignments for class will be for the semester.  Here they are:

Sustainable Foods Outline - 25 points, writing category
Final Sustainable Foods Essay - 100 points, writing category
Independent Reading Essay - 100 points, writing category
Raisin quiz - 25 points, tests and quizzes category
Journal check - 16 points, classwork category
College Essay draft - 100 points, finals category

Hopefully that helps with managing your time over the last 5 weeks (!)
